4 Tips to Keep Your Lungs Strong and Healthy: Your Best Chance Against COVID-19
We have a very good friend who is a blues harmonica player. I was teasing him the other day that we don’t have to worry about him getting sick because he probably has the healthiest lungs in the state. Blowing that “harp” gives his lungs plenty of exercise, strength and elasticity!
If you are NOT a professional harmonica player, however, read on. We have two specialized products and four practical tips, including two breathing techniques, that will make your lungs more ready to stand strong against this current illness.
When Your Lungs Are Under Attack
According to WebMD, there are many kinds of Coronavirus, including the one that causes the common cold. Although COVID-19, the illness caused by the novel Coronavirus, has many and varied symptoms, its most dangerous manifestation is how it can potentially attack the lungs.
“The new coronavirus latches its spiky surface proteins to receptors on healthy cells, especially those in your lungs.” (WebMD, Apr 24, 2020)
Many people who contract the disease suffer fairly mild symptoms, but COVID-19 can cause difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, which can lead to hypoxia (low oxygen saturation), pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Patients may need to be put on a breathing machine called a ventilator. This is why people who have pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), or genetic respiratory diseases like Cystic Fibrosis need to be especially careful to avoid this virus.
It seems likely that increasing oxygen and keeping your lungs supple and strong will help you fight COVID-19.
Luckily, the company that makes our excellent Candida overgrowth-fighting products also has two products that specifically address these issues.
Silica is an “essential mineral” because the body cannot manufacture it on its own. Silica has been found to support the strength and flexibility of human tissue, which is especially important in lung function. It is a major constituent of collagen and therefore provides strength and flexibility to connective tissue, joint cartilage, hair, skin, nails, and blood vessels, which may support heart health.
Silica has also been shown to build strong bones by facilitating the deposit of calcium and minerals into the interior of the bone. SilicaPlus™ is a colloidal suspension of silica, which makes it more easily absorbed by the body. It is easily taken by adding a few drops to water.
Oxygen, obviously, is essential to life. Oxygen Elements Max™ is a stimulant-free, proprietary blend that increases oxygen in the body, increases blood flow, and neutralizes free radicals. It is a simple drop, that when added to water or other beverages, is designed to distribute oxygen to the cells. (It also assists the body in absorbing ThreeLac™ and Candizolv™, our primary Candida-fighters.)
4 Things Anyone Can Do to Get More Oxygen
Below are some additional tips to get more O2 into YOU!
Exercise
Ah, yes, it’s back to that! The human body was designed to exercise, which increases lung capacity, encourages deep breathing, and pumps oxygen into your system. But, you don’t have to be an Olympian. Going to the gym may not be practical during times of Social Distancing, but even simple exercise works. For example, you can walk your dog, dance, take a walk in the woods, or ride your bike. Find something you enjoy doing, then do it.
Laugh!
Yes, the physical act of laughter increases oxygen. According to the Mayo Clinic: “Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs, and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.”
Stress Less
You know why. . . so many reasons. But the one we are pinpointing here is that when you are stressed, your breathing tends to become quick and shallow, allowing less oxygen into your body, which (ironically) increases stress. And decreases oxygen!
Breathe
Get in the habit of taking deep breaths, not just into your chest, but all the way down to your belly. Pull as much oxygen as possible into your lungs, where your blood vessels capture it and spread it throughout your body. If you are feeling mildly adventurous, try these two simple yoga breathing techniques to strengthen and add flexibility to your lungs. These are four practices are different than playing the harmonica, but they should help you keep your lungs strong and healthy just the same!
