Candida Treatment & the Challenge to Give Up Sugar (Part I)
Spoiler Alert: ThreeLac™ Can Help
So, once again, my New Year’s Resolution is to quit eating sugar. For good. For MY own good.
The first few days of 2017 were a great success, because I woke up New Year’s Day with chills and a fever and a sore throat and no desire to eat anything–much less sugar. (It took me years to figure out that the annual holiday cold/flu/ear infection had anything to do with the previous weeks of unrestrained sweets. Finally, a savvy doctor mentioned to me that sugar weakens the immune system. Hmm . . . and yet here I am. Again.)
So now this illness has simmered down into a nasty cold, and I still can’t smell or taste, but already I am hearing the weak but tasty siren song of chocolate . . .
The Candida-Sugar Connection
We all know the bad press about the seductive sweet: sugar causes or worsens obesity, heart disease, diabetes, possibly cancer (really) – and of course, it aggravates Candida.
Why is it so hard for us to resist something that clearly is not in our best interest?
Science has actually proven that sugar stimulates the same pleasure centers in the brain as heroin and cocaine. Therefore it is addictive. And, dang, it also tastes good!
Artificial sweeteners are not the answer because they stimulate the same areas of the brain (and the gut), without the caloric payoff, and they have been shown to be EVEN MORE addictive than sugar! They actually trick your body into thinking it is eating sugar, triggering fat-storage and insulin resistance (M. Y. Pepino, C. D. Tiemann, B. W. Patterson, B. M. Wice, S. Klein. Sucralose Affects Glycemic and Hormonal Responses to an Oral Glucose Load. Diabetes Care, 2013.)
According to Mark Hyman, M.D., “Recent studies have not been kind to artificial sweeteners, claiming among other problems they adversely affect gut health and glucose tolerance.”
Intense Sugar Cravings Often Signal that Your Candida is Out of Control!
Overgrown fungal yeast wants to eat, and what is its favorite food? Same as yours and mine – sugar! Those nasty little fungal yeasts become like your neighborhood drug dealer, urging you to take a little more, just a bit more, and more . . .
The good news is that controlling the Candida can help so much with the sugar cravings.
If that sugar "jones" starts sneaking up on me, I add more ThreeLac™ to my regimen for a few days, and I notice a difference right away. After less than a week, I can usually go back to my maintenance dose, and have my self-control back in place.
In Part Two of this post, I’ll offer you some addition “hacks” to cut way back on this annoyingly addictive substance . . .
